Cast concrete elements, both interior and exterior were finished with Concretal W Lasur Mineral Silicate Stain/Glaze to minimize color variations in cast concrete and patches that were required to render the surface smooth and uniform.  Concretal Lasur was chosen as it would not cover completely or change the texture of the cast concrete.

About This Project

New construction required a very uniform color and appearance for various cast concrete elements, including interior and exterior walls, beams and columns.  Color of cast concrete varied dramatically from batch to batch, and was not acceptable.  The architect required that the appearance and texture of the cast concrete remain unchanged, but wanted a more uniform color tone to help hide the color variations.  In addition, much patching was required to deliver a more uniform concrete texture.

Challenges After concrete forms were removed, the concrete contained many voids, gaps and blow-holes that required patching with a cement compound. Patches were dramatically different in color from cast concrete and needed to be blended in to appear monolithic and uniform in color.
Solutions Concretal Lasur Mineral Stain/Glaze was recommended to provide for color development without changing the surface texture or profile. Concretal Lasur is a "thin-bodied" stain like finish that penetrates deep into concrete and will not alter the surface profile. Various dilutions ratios with Concretal Dilution were tested to determine the exact amount of color and transparency desired. The final dilution ratio of 1:1 was required as the patch material was significantly darker than the original cast concrete.
